This article is the result of a literature search was undertaken within the Research Group UniABC and aimed to further questions raised in the classroom, both in the Faculty of Education as the Educational Psychology course, in disciplines related to language. The research began with the lifting of papers, theses and books dealing with the issue. Following this survey, we made a selection of relevant texts. The texts analyzed show that the learning of writing involves acquisition of a system of symbolic representation of reality and among them is the drawing as a precursor of writing. Thus, the article discusses the similarities and differences between the two systems of representation - drawing and writing - as well as the need for a change of educational psychologists to look beyond the standards, trying to see children for who they are and not by what they lack.
