CRUZ, Michelle Brugnera  e  SILVA, Thaise da. Diversity barbie: the multicultural discourse at the doll from the point of view of the children's. Constr. psicopedag. [online]. 2012, vol.20, n.20, pp. 91-113. ISSN 1415-6954.

Surrounded by a world of beauty, wealth and adventure, Barbie doll is immersed in a cultural pedagogy that aims to teach the supremacy of a specific body shape, race or behavior. With all the encouragement from the media, how do children play with this doll? Keeping this in mind, this report aims to study the representations of Barbie doll in children's culture by stimulating discursive practices related to the concept of cultural diversity in a group of children from the early grades of Elementary School from a public school unit located at the outskirts of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. With such a purpose, we presented to the children Barbie dolls which were different from those available at the school, including in their play Barbie dolls representing black people, wheelchair users, and elderly people, among others. We describe the discursive practices that emerged from their conversations, attitudes and interactions in the games as an attempt to understand how those concepts operate. The analysis of children's discourse and practices was based on the Psychopedagogy Studies, since it is a knowledge field dedicated to study subjective and objective learning processes in which playing activities are central. In order to analyze the cultural representation of the doll, previous studies on this subject were also taken as reference. The results show that despite the commercial and advertising appeal, the children make new constructions and reinvent Barbie.
