Abstract

COSTA, Hebe C. Boa-Viagem A.. Redeeming the memory of the pioneers: João Cruz Costa (* 13/02/1904 - † 10/10/1978) Patrono da cadeira nº 32. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.28, n.2, pp. 149-157. ISSN 1415-711X.

Brazilian philosopher João Cruz Costa was an Assistant to Jean Magüé at the former Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of SP, and later was hired as Professor to the Chair of Philosophy. After examination, approved with honors, he was then elected as Catedratic Professor of Philosophy at that same Faculty. His intelectual production is large and versatile, especially on the development of the philosophical ideas in Brazil, seeking to establish relations between thought and the social reality, politics and the economy of our country through its history. His teachings surpassed our borders. Essayist, critic, sociologist, biographer, as well as philosopher, all this indicates the diversity of his knowledge. He divulged his works in a simple language, through teachings and articles in important newspapers of that time: Estado de São Paulo, Folha da Manhã, Jornal de São Paulo, Minerva de Buenos Aires and Jornadas do México. He was also a member of the São Paulo Writers Society, the Biology Society, the São Paulo Historic and Geographic Society and the Mexican History of Ideas Society, which proves the vastness of his knowledge. He was retired precociously in 1965 during the period known as the military dictatorship. He passed away in 1978.
