Dr. Oscar Freire de Carvalho, the prestigious Brazilian physician, was born in Bahia on October 3rd, 1882. Precocious, he was accepted at the Bahia Medical School at the age of 14, and graduated at 18 years of age. He started his practice as a surgeon but, soon, under the influence of Raimundo Nina Rodrigues, his professor and dear friend, he shifted his interest to work in the field of Legal Medicine. In March, 1907, after a brilliant exam, he became substitute professor of Legal Medicine and Hygiene. In 1914 he was promoted as a full professor of Legal Medicine at the Medical School in Bahia. Invited by Dr. Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, he moved to Sao Paulo where he introduced the Legal Medicine discipline on April 18th, 1918. He was the founder of the Criminology and Legal Medicine Society and the Teaching and Educational Society. As a professor in the field of Medicine and a scientist, he left innumerous scientific papers, articles in the daily newspaper, hundreds of legal-medical reports, lectures and many other studies. He died in Sao Paulo on January 11th, 1923. Oscar Freire was a speaker in favor of ethical principles and altruism among physicians.
