CRUCES, Alacir Villa Valle. The correctional facilities situation in Brazil and the work of psychologists in these institutions: an analysis of the interviews with egresses and reincidents. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2010, vol.30, n.1, pp. 136-154. ISSN 1415-711X.

The objective of this article is to analyze the work of psychologists in correctional facilities, based on the role assigned to them by the Penal Execution Law (Law No. 7210 of 11 July 1984, amended by Law 10,792 of 1 December 2003) and the fact that this function is being restricted to the classification of convicts and not to the accompaniment of their respective sentences. Activities that could be offered to help the person arrested reframe his life and values, to mature and prepare to deal with everyday situations are not found in most criminal units. Interviews with egresses of this system in order to understand the influence of deprivation of liberty in their lives, showed the many difficulties that they encountered, and continue to find, to maintain themselves in a socially accepted way and to withdraw from the experiences of the detention period. In conclusion, with these data, it is imperative and urgent to modify the work being done by psychologists in the prison system and emphasize also the necessity of taking penalties and alternative measures that effectively allow maturation, reflection and transformation of people who came into conflict with the law, its internal and external conditions and the community to which they belong.
