The work of firefighters is complex and demands technical and specific skills to face stressful situations; the research of health of this population in the context of psychological assessment of post-traumatic stress disorder is relevant in order to understand the mechanisms used to prevent and treat post-traumatic stress. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the presence of indexes of posttraumatic stress disorder in Brazilians military firefighters. The sample consisted of 216 firefighters from different grades, males with a mean age of 35 years (desvio padrão = 7,52 years). To obtain the indexes, tools to assess sociodemographic form were used, the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III, the General Health Questionnaire of Goldberg and the scale of posttraumatic stress of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The results indicate that the participants have a high risk for disorder or even their presence, in relation to general health, the group with PTSD traits shows significant differences between the averages with respect to those without the disorder traits. Studies about specific instruments aimed at verification and early intervention for PTSD in the labor scenario are needed and underpin ongoing research.
