MORAES, Allana Almeida; HORTA, Rogério Lessa; FARINA, Marianne  y  ARGIMON, Irani Iracema de Lima. Signs of distress in mothers of children in post-surgery for congenital heart disease. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.34, n.86, pp. 244-261. ISSN 1415-711X.

The present study investigates depressive symptoms occurrence and assesses the levels of depression, anxiety and hopelessness in mothers of babies in post-cardiac surgical procedure in pediatric ICU. For such, the Depression Inventory (BDI), Anxiety (BAI) and hopelessness (BHS) of the Beck Scale were used. The sample consisted of 16 mothers of children ages birth to 2 years old. The results suggest the predominance of optimism, yet high incidence of depressive and anxiety symptoms. The verification of the occurrence of depression, hopelessness and anxiety symptoms in mothers subjected to stressful conditions such as care in the ICU contributes for the statement about the need for the provision of systematic support in the hospital context for them, regardless of whether they are mothers with previously identified mental disorders or predisposition for their development. The importance of ensuring the maintenance and expansion of care is highlighted, along with the inclusion of preventive measures in mental health, both to patients and professional staff, considering that caregivers require care in order to remain in the role of caring.

Palabras clave : Depression; anxiety; heart disease; motherhood.
