FIGLIE, Neliana Buzi  e  GUIMARAES, Lívia Pires. The Motivational Interview: conversations about changes . Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.34, n.87, pp. 472-489. ISSN 1415-711X.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative type of conversation focused on strengthening the motivation and commitment to change. Launched in 1983, it has undergone changes aimed at adapting to the complexity inherent to the professionalclient relationship. From this perspective, this article was written so as to present MI's proposal and its most recent transformations. It describes its principles, strategies and traps, and also introduces the "MI's spirit" idea, based on four elements, namely partnership, acceptance, evocation and compassion. The article also presents MI's basic premises and processes, which are developed by means of engagement, focus, evocation and planning. It displays the positive evidences seen when MI is utilized in the beginning of the treatment. In addition, its effects are quickly noticed, but yet tend to decrease after a period of 12 months, and this latter aspect is one of the reasons why MI has undergone successive modifications. MI is currently developed as an approach that, by means of tests and adaptations following scientific rigor, aims at stabilizing ambivalence and add a humanist and constructivist vision to changes to be made to risk behavior.
