CASARIN, Sonia  e  CASTANHO, Marisa Irene Siqueira. Down Syndrome and Art: contributions of Vygotsky. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.36, n.90, pp. 31-47. ISSN 1415-711X.

The aim of this article is to analyze art as an alternate path for the development of people with Down syndrome. The analysis is based on literature review on the thought of Vygotsky: the prospect of development of typically human mental functions in social interactions, and the value of art in the link between the social and the individual. It is understood that the inclusive movement has broadened the possibility of social participation of people with disabilities; however, only the opening of opportunities was not sufficient to ensure the development and inclusion of these people. The analysis noted the benefit of art in favor of the expression of emotions and feelings; interaction with other people and the positive effect on self-esteem and self-confidence. Based on Vygotsky, art is a means of social compensation for a person with disability, because it opens up possibilities for overcoming the limitations by means of expression and communication that the artistic activity promotes
