This article proposes to present a critical reflection about the development of Thanatology in the world and in Brazil, the creation of courses concerning the progress of the area, with emphasis on the course Psychology of Death created in 1986 at the Psychology Institute, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Studies about bereavement, suicide, end of life care, formation of health and education professionals concerning the theme of death and courses about death in the world and Brazil are presented. In the second part of the article the history of the course Psychology of Death is presented, the program, evaluation and after 30 years what remains as essential aspects in the course. A proposal of death education concerning the formation of the psychologist to be extended to professionals of health and education is presented and discussed
