TOLEDO, Juliane Alvarez de  e  RODRIGUES, Marisa Cosenza. Theory of mind in adults: a narrative review of the literature. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.37, n.92, pp. 139-156. ISSN 1415-711X.

Theory of mind involves the ability to understand and attribute mental states such as beliefs, emotions and intentions to oneself and to others, contributing to the prediction of behaviors. Studies on its acquisition and development in childhood contrast with the limited knowledge about this ability in the adult individual, the focus of the present narrative review of the literature. We searched the databases Dialnet, ERIC, PsycINFO and Redalyc, using the descriptors theory of mind, development and adults, which identified 341 studies, including 31 complete articles. Of these studies, 12 evaluated samples of adults with neuro-typical development and 19 analyzed samples of adults with some clinical condition. It is observed that there is a scarcity of studies on theory of mind in adults, and that in the normative population, the investigations converge on the automaticity of this capacity and its possible association to other cognitive processes. As for neuro-clinical adults, it was ascertained that there is a tendency to compare these groups with groups of healthy individuals, in order to measure possible declines in theory of mind. It is hoped that these findings will be of great value for the basis of this socio-cognitive domain and that they will contribute towards future research and interventions
