Abstract

SANTOS, Sinara et al. Paternal experience facing the diagnosis of fetal malformation. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2018, vol.38, n.94, pp. 87-97. ISSN 1415-711X.

This study aimed to examine the paternal reports about their experiences in the diagnosis of fetal malformation, seeking to understand the meaning of such event in their lives. It was a qualitative-descriptive research, with intensive direct observation, through a semi-structured interview as the choice of data collection. The fathers were individually interviewed, and the examination of the resulting material from the interviews was performed by Content Analysis. 6 interviews of greater relevance and convenience for the study were selected, grouped into 5 categories. The findings showed that the involvement of a gestation with diagnosis of malformation is lived intensely and generates great emotional paternal impact. Therefore, it is important that service teams take preventive measures to avoid psychological damage to the fathers, welcoming their feelings, actively including them in the follow-up to pregnancy, stimulating the manifestation of their expectations and frustrations, helping to adjust themselves to the real babies

Keywords : fetal malformation; congenital abnormalities; paternity; pregnancy.
