The study aimed to analyze how social and group factors interfere with the weight regain of patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Ten patients with four years or more of surgery and with a minimum of 15% weight loss were interviewed using a semi-structured interview script about: demographic data, eating habits, lifestyle changes, behavioral changes, body image, self-esteem, experienced prejudices and weight regain. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for content analysis. It was found that all participants were afraid of regaining weight and that weight loss was an important element to have more access to better-looking clothes. The embarrassment in witnessing feeding pairs disappeared and the social return on body image and weight regain was considered important by the interviewees. New eating habits were established after the procedure, but it is observed that the convivial group makes comments about the low amount of food ingested by the participants, generating social nuisance and raising in the pairs a greater supply of food. It is concluded that the behavior of the pairs influences the resumption of eating patterns prior to surgery.
