Abstract

COSTA, Adriano da Silva. Regulatory fit theory: psychological mechanism with potential applications in health. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.41, n.100, pp. 55-64. ISSN 1415-711X.

The goal of this paper is to present Regulatory Fit as a psychological mechanism and the benefits of its use in health promotion and disease prevention. I believe this phenomenon has been neglected by Brazilian researchers, especially in the field of psychology. Regulatory Fit occurs when the manner in which a particular individual engages in an activity maintains the current motivational orientation and interests of the individual. This work reflects on the possibilities and limits of the use of this mechanism in health-related investigations and allows to draw attention of public health promotion agencies to the construction of messages or intervention programs that use this mechanism to increase persuasion and modify behaviors.

Keywords : Regulatory focus; Regulatory fit; motivation & behavior.
