Abstract

SOUZA, Regina Maria de. Rethinking relationships: deaf person and hearing professionals. Estilos clin. [online]. 1998, vol.3, n.4, pp. 130-145. ISSN 1415-7128.

The objective of this paper is to discuss the nature of the clinical relationship which is often established between hearing specialists and deaf people. The analysis of this matter brings to light the deep mechanisms of control revealed in the actions of the specialists. In the final analysis, the practices they engender subjugate the deaf and restrict their possibilities for satisfactory social and emotional development. Countering such a perspective, I inscribe this matter in the realm of the educational sphere, according to the bilingual approach, which demands the construction of new conceptions, not only of deafness, but also of deafness, but also of the deaf person.

Keywords : Psychology and deafness; bilingual education; globalization.
