Abstract

BALDISSARELLA, Lisiane  and  DELL'AGLIO, Débora Dalbosco. Within the limits of life and death: a case study on the parents/baby relationship in a neonatal ICU. Estilos clin. [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.26, pp. 68-89. ISSN 1415-7128.

This paper discusses the importance of parents/baby relationship in cases of fetal malformation and hospitalization in neonatal ICU, through the case study of a psychological accompaniment in a public hospital in Porto Alegre, RS. During the follow up, reactions of denial, self-accusation, feelings of guilt and difficulties of the parents to bond to the newborn were observed. Through the psychological care, parents could better understand the reality of their child, were able to get closer to the baby, participate in the basic care, and develop an emotional bond with the child. This study shows the relevance of psychological accompaniment of families with hospitalized babies in the postnatal period.

Keywords : ICU; neonatal; parents [baby relationship]; congenital malformation.
