Abstract

MAIA, Aline Borba; MEDEIROS, Cynthia Pereira de  and  FONTES, Flávio. The concept of symptom in psychoanalysis: an introduction. Estilos clin. [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp. 44-61. ISSN 1415-7128.

The concept of symptom is fundamental to psychoanalysis, guides its practice, establishes its therapeutic limits and has become an object of interest to otherfields of knowledge, such as Education. We present the evolution of this concept in the works of Freud and Lacan in order to offe r the reader a guide through the theoretical trajectory of those authors, inviting the reader to make its own path. Miller (1987), Ocariz (2003) and Conde (2008), showed us how to analyze the works of Freud and Lacan revealing that along the works of Freud, the symptom appears as an expression of a psychic conflict, a message from the unconscious and instinctual satisfaction. Lacan, in his reading of Freud, presents the symptom as message, jo y (joussaince) and invention.

Keywords : psychoanalytic theory; psychological distress; concept of synthome; unconscious formations; psychoanalytical treatment.
