This paper aims to discuss issues related to the process of maternity during a pregnancy which is interrupted by the death of the baby at birth or soon after that. Some considerations are made about the traumatic effect of this on the maternal psyche, specifically with regard to facing disruption and deconstruction of the process of motherhood that during pregnancy was being set and was abruptly interrupted and overlapped by grief. The paper finds support in the psychoanalytic theory of Freud and Winnicott, and is anchored in the notions of: primary maternal preoccupation, narcissism, identification and mourning.
