Abstract

PAIXAO, Rafaela  and  ROCHA, Zeferino. The face and the back of adaptation in childhood. Estilos clin. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.2, pp. 366-389. ISSN 1415-7128.  http://dx.doi.org/http//dx.doi.org/0.11606/issn.1981-1624.v21i2p366-389.

This paper discusses about the contemporary childhood, problematizing the effects generated in the process of subjectivity of children as a result to cultural frenzy of "high performance". Therefore, we analyzed the paradoxes contained in the concept of adaptation, from the reading of Winnicott and Sándor Ferenczi's work, reflecting how the free expression of children can become a psychological deterrent front to historical changes and new social arrangements. Finally, we advocate that the contemporary trends to adaptability and pathological psychic suffering of children have produced a restriction on the freedom to be creative in childhood.

Keywords : childhood; adaptation; pathologization; psychological distress.
