Abstract

FERES-CARNEIRO, Terezinha; MELLO, Renata; MACHADO, Rebeca Nonato  and  MAGALHAES, Andrea Seixas. Parental expectations in contemporaneous temporality. Estilos clin. [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp. 29-44. ISSN 1415-7128.  http://dx.doi.org/10.11606/issn.1981-1624.v22i1p29-44.

This study proposes a reflection on parent-child expectations in contemporaneous temporality. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 132 members of heterosexual and homosexual-parent families, belonging to the middle-class of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with different configurations. The interviews were analyzed using the content analysis method. We noted that the current ideals of society engender changes upon the way of thinking the life projects of the next generation. We concluded that most parents and most children present expectations facing the profession, pointing to the representation of a future employee. Such representation often makes the process of human development equivalent to the process of professional growth.

Keywords : parenthood; expectations; child development; contemporaneity.
