YOKOYAMA*, Cláudia Emi; CARVALHO*, Renata Soares de  e  VIZZOTTO**, Marília Martins. Quality of life in the old-age among the users of an elderly reference center. Psicol inf. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.10, pp. 57-82. ISSN 1415-8809.

Life expectancy has increased all over the world and living longer with quality has become a great challenge, therefore, further studies on the subject are revealing relevant. The present study had as objectives: a) to describe social-demographic and cultural characteristics of an elderly population in a reference center for the elderly; b) to investigate the quality of life of these elder men and women according to their own perception; e c) to identify resemblances and differences between men and women towards their perception of good or bad quality of life. 30 elder people participated in this study. The quality of life was evaluated through a Quality of Life Scale. The elderly, users of a reference center in the ABC Paulista area, were 10 men and 20 women, aging 60 to 82 years. The analysis was made through the grouping of data and creation of categories. The frequencies and averages of the answers were also taken. The results indicated that the elderly valorize and attribute their good quality of life to dimensions of the human life such as: physical health; emotional equilibrium; keeping good affective bonds with family and friends; participating in recreational activities; favorable financial conditions; public organs support in providing their needs and education; and, spirituality. As for the bad quality of life, the first two dimensions pointed out were equally referred: bad general health and negative emotional state. Only the third dimension mentioned was different from the previous category: financial difficulties. The remaining dimensions were the same as the ones previously mentioned. The answers related to bad quality of life revealed that the natural losses of the old-age appeared as a matter of concern, however in a subjective manner. The implantation of prophylactic measures is suggested to be based on the elderly perception
