Abstract

MARTINS, Adriana Dias; ANDRE, Renata Lins  and  OLIVEIRA, Vera Barros de. The play of five-year-olds at school. Psicol inf. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.10, pp. 109-129. ISSN 1415-8809.

This research addresses the multiple modalities of play of five-year-old children at school environment, analysing its cognitive and affective-relational aspects. It is based on a piagetian approach, joint with a winnicottian one. It focuses on the age of five, at the Intuitive Pre-Operational Period and it considers the individual differences. It is developed on a private school of a great-sized city. Initially, it characterises the ludic environment according to Cumulative Environmental Stimulation Inventory (CESI) of Pérez-Ramos; Pérez-Ramos. Follows the performing of ten ludic observations, at the Toy Libary and the Playground. As to the CESI, data reveals that the available area is excellent but misused; the Toy Librarian’s formation is also lacking. Regarding the observed games, a predominance of collective Symbolic Play is registered, with strong imaginary content and theme centred on the family and competitions; there is still much physical activity and rules are featured already. The rule games are also observed, albeit demonstrating need of clarification for correct use of the games. The research verifies the little time school reserves for the ludic, how much children need to play and the great pleasure taken in it, as well as its contribution to the integrated development of children and the construction of their self-sufficiency and socialisation.
