Abstract

TARDIVO, Leila Salomão de La Plata Cury. Suffering, uprootedness, and exclusion: account of an experience with acculturated Amazon Indians. Psicol inf. [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.11, pp. 113-126. ISSN 1415-8809.

The author shares the experience of trips made to the region of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (North of the State of Amazon) in the condition of a social clinical psychologist. She describes her contacts with youths, families, and communities, most of which were comprised by Indians from many different ethnics, all of them in accelerated process of acculturation. She describes these encounters, interviews, and the use of graphic expression techniques, such as the Thematic Drawing Story, as co-mediators in group therapy appointments. In this account, the author describes hers experiences with individual sessions and reflections about the episodes: the rich experience of people living in that area, specially their suffering as a possible result of a situation of intense uprootedness and exclusion. These refletions indicate the necessity of developing new psychologycal practices.
