MARSON, Ana Paula. Narcisismo materno: quando meu bebê não vai para casa.... Rev. SBPH [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.1, pp. 161-169. ISSN 1516-0858.

The author makes some reflection about early pregnancy when  it emerges a crisis between the woman and her identity, the motherhood and the fact of becoming a mother.  The rupture of meeting an idealized child and the surprise of meeting a real one that prohibits her to become a mother collapses her dreams, her idealizations, creating a rupture in the mother and in the baby´s routine that comes to the world showing a small and fragile look.  The pregnancy and the transference from the imaginary to the real baby tend to be interrupted by a hard reality where the idealized child doesn´t correspond at all to the baby in the incubator.  Therefore the mother´s narcissism is deeply hurt. She gave birth to an incomplete or ill baby, being deprived of the social celebration for the birth and also the congratulations from relatives and friends. The social acceptance doesn’t belong to her.  The mother must deal at this moment with feelings of  sorrow, heartache and sadness that wake up or restart the experience of  punishment and persecution establishing an affective regression in the object-libido and narcisic as well. This reflections become useful to the point of giving the mother a hearing  opportunity, so she can  add up the feelings raised because of this situation, playing the role of this dyad moment mother/baby.
