VERAS, Lana  e  MOREIRA, Virgínia. A compreensão do mundo vivido da criança sertaneja com câncer: contribuições do livro “Dudu vai ao hospital”. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.1, pp.3-16. ISSN 1516-0858.

This article is an attempt to present the children’s book “Dudu goes to the Hospital: sharing experiences of kids with cancer” as a contribution on the comprehension of the lived world of the northeast child with cancer, thus, aiming to ease the relationship between kids and their health, from the prevention throughout the treatment, rehabilitation or death. The article did not only consider the use of the book in a tertiary intervention, in hospitals, but also in schools, families and communities. Topics as: health paradigms, psychology's goalof building its own space and professional identity, and the contact with the mundane reality were discussed improving the creation of alternatives and construction of an instrument that tries to approach our cultural reality closely. The context referred to: being Brazilian, from the northeast and living in an area ofsevere social inequality. The emergent issues were: the need to understand the person's life before the diagnose, cultural shocks, social issues, diagnose, institucionalization, treatment, suffering, losses and possibilities. For that reason, the content of the book was articulated with the reflections and theories from some of the main authors in this area.
