Abstract

PORTO, Flávia Figueira de Andrade  and  BITTENCOURT, Maria Inês Garcia de Freitas. Time for those who are waiting: reflections from psychological work with cardiology patients in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.2, pp. 43-53. ISSN 1516-0858.

This work was inspired by an experience in psychological therapy of hospitalized patients in the coronary unit of a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The urgency of time was observed in surgical and clinical patients, motivated by the expectation of health recovery, including relational and occupational life, personal projects and the return to family life. This study sought support in poetry to describe some feelings related to therapeutic practice. Physical space and its implications for communication between the patients, the medical team and family, the management of knowledge / power relationship and the resulting affective relationship in the staff were fundamental conditions for the quality of subjective feelings in the hospitalized subjects. This work, which started from a psychoanalytic perspective and from studies on patterns of asylum care institutions (Goffman, 1987), outlined the importance of emotional relationships in order to mitigate the impacts generated by the waiting time with creative possibilities.
