Introduction: Health professionals, particularly those who engaging to work in emergency units are subjected to high stress level, that damaging both the professional and emotional state of the patient and the professional as concentration, decision-making capacity, the threshold of irritability, reasoning, reflection, serenity, tenderness, are very committed. Method: Seeing that in the region there is no research on stress in hospitals, was chosen a basic health unit to conduct the study. The present study aims to identify the stress levels of professionals on duty of a Health Unit. The instrument used was Job Scale Stress, adapted to Portuguese, which includes 17 questions to assess the dimensions - psychological demands, control (intellectual discernment and authority) and social support. The study is descriptive, with quantitative data analysis. 28 professionals of hospital participated in the study, among which 16 are directly related to professional health, this team is made up of one doctor, three nurses, one nursing assistant, nine nursing technicians, an x-ray technician, a trainee nurse and a trauma technician. The twelve other professionals are not directly related to health services, they are two cleaning assistants, two cooks, two guards, one driver and four receptionists. Results: showed high scores for psychological demands scale and low scores for the dimensions of control and social support, indicating psychological distress and stress; Discussion: The experience of stress is multifaceted, because there are several dimensions that may contribute to the emergence of problems in the workplace, so it is suggested that further studies are made for further research on these dimensions. Conclusion: The results reinforce the importance of investigation on occupational stress in professionals who work in health care, directly and indirectly dealing with patients, because, as we know, the pressure that workers receive in their work environment significantly influence well-being of the same. We also emphasize the need for further research in this context, in particular, the investigation of differential stress factors by age and gender.
