The present work aims to address one of the themes found by monitoring the patients and their families admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Children's Hospital St. Anthony: anticipatory grief. In this phenomenon, patients and families who spend long periods in hospital, many feel lost between the time of discovery of the diagnosis until death itself from the family and patient. This study seeks a greater understanding of how this process is reveals the ICU, with the intention of obtaining more resources to help these families. For this, a literature review was conducted covering topics such as loss and family, death, grief until reach the understanding of anticipatory grief. Through some vignettes can illustrate some of the everyday in ICU in order to illustrate the delicacy and importance in helping them to develop their losses and often make significant farewells.
