Abstract

This study aimed to identify the social representation of the Health Psychology for the families of patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit, since the hospital psychology seeks to minimize the suffering in relation to hospitalization. To this end, we carried out semi-structured interviews with twelve families. To his end, interviews were conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve families, having developed a field research qualitative and descriptive. The data were categorized and analyzed based on content analysis, seeking the answers relate to the theory of social representation and studies on the psychology hospital. The social representation of family members of patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit in relation to hospital psychologist is based on the psychological experiences. Thus, family members perceive the psychologist as a professional for help´, advise, inform and prepare the family about the situation on the patient and the hospital environment and also recognize the need for this work in other hospital environments.
