The primary caregiver in the process of any disease is extremely important for care with both patient and professionals team serving this patient, therefore, for these, the caregiver is the intermediate which, most time will monitor and/or perform the treatment plan set for the individual that is being monitored. The overall goal of this article is pointing how the role of caring can be a possible variant developing the stress presented by the caregiver of cancer patients. The research participants were 10 caregivers, families, with the age between 31 and 73 years old, which were 80% of female gender. The cancer patients, accompanied by the referred caregivers, were attended in a hospital of São Paulo upstate. For data collection, was used a semi structured interview guide and the Inventory Symptoms of Stress for adults (ISSL). The data analysis was quantitative and qualitative. For the ISSL, the answers were evaluated according with the tables and standards of its guide, and for the interview script answers was used the content analysis according to Bardin. The result revealed that 100% of the respondents presented stress, and 60% of which were in the phase of almost exhaustion and 40% in the phase of resistance. For the question - How did you become this patient caregiver? - the focus of this article was extracted from the answers for the following categories: role assumed in life's trajectory; Feeling good with another's well being and The mandatory nature of care. From the analysis made was possible to observe that the way this person became a caregiver can be a pledge stress variant. It is important to highlight that, despite the study reduced sample, the results are compatible with those from other researches, and reinforce the need of specific, effectives and continuous interventions with the primary caregiver of cancer patients, for his health promotion and better life quality.
