Abstract

This article is the result of a research conducted at the Hospital Santa Cruz which aimed to investigate how health professionals understand the performance and functions of the psychologist in the hospital, as well as to learn about the role and importance of this professional in the composition of the multidisciplinary team. For this porpose, semistructured interviews were conducted with various professionals in the team of San Francisco wing and Neopediatric ICU: 2 Doctors, 2 Physiotherapists, 2 Nurses, 2 Nursing Technicians, 2 Nutritionists and Social Workers 2. The axes of research were: (1) hospital psychologist assignments; (2) the importance of the psychologist in a multi-professional team and (3) multidisciplinary team interaction. For data analysis, content analysis, according to Bardin was used. The study showed that teams consider the work of the psychologist is fundamental to the understanding of the health-disease process, as well as to the patients and their families.
