Cardiovascular diseases are the major causes of premature death worldwide, and every year thousands of people are affected by heart diseases. Often this diagnosis comes with the need for surgical intervention, which creates many anguishes for the patients, among them, those related to the absence of symptoms. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the absence of symptoms and the coping process of cardiac surgical patients, regarding diagnosis, surgical and postoperative intervention. The method chosen for this research was a qualitative one. Data collection occurred through semi-structured interviews and the application of the Human Figure Drawing test in three post-surgical, asymptomatic, cardiac patients admitted to a cardiology hospital in São Paulo / SP. The results were analyzed based on Machover Technique and Bardin's Content Analysis, in the light of psychoanalysis. This study has demonstrated that the appropriation of the disease is hampered by the absence of symptoms, which points to an important relationship between such absence and the coping process of the observed patients, especially regarding the diagnosis and surgical intervention.
