Abstract

Introduction: Health care should contemplate cultural care recommending that not only the physiological aspects of aging are addressed. Objective: To describe the depressive symptoms identified by the Geriatric Depression Scale, establishing relationship with cognitive impairment and depressive do mains of institutionalized elderly. Methods: We conducted a descriptive study of institutionalized elderly, we used the Geriatric Depression Scale, the minimental test, clock drawing test and remembering words CERAD battery, classifying the depressive symptoms scale according to Blaizer II & Hydels domains to Blaizer II & Hydels. Results: Among the 30 depressive symptoms in the scale, 18 were significantly associated with the clock drawing test, 8 with immediate recall and 9 with the MMSE. Depressive symptoms associated with cognitive losses predominated in the emotional do main Blaizer II and Hydels. Conclusion: The breakdown of depressive symptoms may facilitate the adoption of actions to reduce the depression of institutionalization.
