Abstract

Elderly's physical dependence can be considered one important concern factor for this population. The study's objective was to understand the subjective sense of the illness and finiteness for the family-caregiver of an elderly and point to acting possibilities for the hospital psychologist's with this population. This is a case study, guided by the qualitative epistemology. Participating in this research were a 40 years old caregiver, daughter of a 66 year old woman hospitalized for nine months. The indicatives identified by the instrumental resources lead to the construction of three sense cores: 1) "Mother's mom and the motherless children" - regarding the symbiotic bond between the dyad as well as the ambivalent request for help; 2) "It's Me for You and You for Me" - core that best sintetizes the case, by expressing what mobilizes Carmen's posture as a caregiver; 3) "My mother is everything - If she dies, I die too" - comprehending three interlacing aspects: attitute of denial regarding mother's eminent death; dysthanasia process the pacient is submitted to; and possibilty of intricate mourning development by the daughter. By permeating this construction, it was possible to inquiry, review, propose, test the hospital psychologist's interventional monitoring with the elderly and, particularly, with the family-caregiver.
