Abstract

ARRAIS, Alessandra da Rocha  and  ARAUJO, Tereza Cristina Cavalcanti Ferreira de. Prenatal Psychology: perspectives for psychologist practice in maternal health in Brazil. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2016, vol.19, n.1, pp. 103-116. ISSN 1516-0858.

In the Brazilian scenario, it is crucial to propose and assess programmes aimed at prenatal care of pregnant women. A modality of psycho-educational intervention called Psychological Prenatal (PNP) is reported in this article. It concerns a service - complementary to the clinical prenatal - related to the psychological care of pregnant women, which also encourages integration of their families into the care given throughout the pregnancy and postpartum cycle. Actions involve thematic group meetings (e.g.: preparation for maternity and prevention of postnatal depression). PNP is a low cost programme that has been positively assessed by users and professionals, which was initially organised within the public sector. Experiences within the private sector that reveal the amplitude of the programme have also been carried out. A detailed description of PNP sessions aims at providing elements for the performance of the psychologist who is part of a multi-professional team in the field of Maternal Health.
