Play is an essential right to child's physical and emotional health. In coping with hospitalization, the toy is presented as a resource to minimize its effects. This study aims to identify the benefits of play for hospitalized children and evaluate the consequences of using different toys in their interactions. For these, a literature, exploratory and qualitative research was perfomed in databases Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Google Scholar on the topic, favoring 26 publications in the period 1998-2012. The information collected was systematized through Content Analysis. The results, in different numbers of samples, pointed to the acceptance of the necessary procedures for the child's rehabilitation. We conclude that the toy can provide the continuity of development, besides showing as a valuable resource for reframing the pain and suffering experienced by hospitalized children.
