Abstract

SCHARDONG, Felipe; CARDOSO, Nicolas de Oliveira  and  MAZONI, Claudia Galvão. Coping strategies and anxiety of parents of children with cancer - an integrative review. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2017, vol.20, n.1, pp. 32-54. ISSN 1516-0858.

This study aimed to analyze the coping strategies and parental anxiety level of parents of children with cancer. A integrative review of the literature was conducted, searching for articles in the databases BVS, PubMed and PsycINFO. The used descriptors were coping, anxiety, parents and cancer. Inclusion criteria were empirical researches, written in english, spanish and portuguese, that answered to the research problem. Ten articles were identified, regarding the subject, only in English. The results showed that parents of children with cancer had more difficulties to deal with coping strategies and anxiety when compared to parents of children with other diseases. It was concluded that the psychic burden, in many of the parents, reflected in increased anxiety and in the choice of the use of coping strategies. The scientific literature on the subject is scarce, indicating the need for investigations, especially on the brazilian scene.

Keywords : coping strategies; anxiety; parents; children; cancer.
