Abstract

FLORISBAL, Gabriela Santos  and  DONELLI, Tagma Marina Schneider. Reliving losses: a study with hospitalized patients at a hospital unit. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2017, vol.20, n.1, pp. 75-98. ISSN 1516-0858.

The aim of this study was to understand the hospital experience of patients hospitalized at a general hospital in Porto Alegre/RS, which had already experienced an emotional loss due to the death of a loved relative. Five patients hospitalized at a hospital unit were interviewed in 2015. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, recorded, transcribed and qualitatively analyzed by content analysis method. Four categories were established: (1) history of family loss, (2) health historic, (3) hospitalization experience and (4) reliving of loss. Results revealed that the process of hospitalization is a triggering factor for the reliving of affective losses, independently of the time passed since the loss occurred. Furthermore, the listening work of hospital psychologist needs to transcend the hospitalization process, because the observed data indicates that the patient can manifest the suffering in face of the loss through the ill body.

Keywords : mourning process; hospitalization; reliving of losses.
