Introduction: The Psychological Assessment is characterized by the use of psychological tests and techniques. It provides reliable inferences for the diagnosis, helping in the formulation of diagnostic hypotheses. Besides, it is a valuable tool in the treatment planning. Objective: To describe the demand of psychological evaluation in a psychiatric inpatient unit of a general university hospital. Method: Survey of psychological evaluations conducted by the Psychology Service in the Adult Psychiatry Inpatient Unit in 2015. Results: The Psychology Service received 99 requests for psychological evaluation, 85% were successfully completed. The results provide data on the average time between the request of the exam and its release on the system, patients’ type of health insurance, age, education level and diagnosis. Conclusions: The psychological assessment enables a relatively fast and in-depth knowledge of the patient, which is essential in a psychiatric inpatient unit.
