In neonatal clinic there is a high number of premature babies hospitalized in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The causes leading to this clinical intervention are varied and may be due to complications pre, peri and post-partum. The objective of this research is to investigate the psychological reactions of the parents before the hospitalization of their premature baby in a neonatal ICU and the specific objectives are: to verify the feelings experienced by parents before the hospitalization of premature infants and identify how parents cope with the hospitalization of the infants. This is a field research, with a qualitativedescriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through semistructured interviews with four couples and two mothers with baby hospitalized in a neonatal ICU. The analysis method used was discourse analysis. The results emerged from categories that expressed feelings such as: anxiety, anguish, helplessness, fear, desire to escape, among others; coping reactions are related to personal and social factors. It was concluded that the admission of a premature child causes important psychological and social consequences.
