VIEIRA, André Guirland  e  WAISCHUNNG, Cristiane Dias. The practice of the hospitalar psychologist in Intensive Care Units: the attention given to patients, family and staff, a review. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.1, pp. 132-153. ISSN 1516-0858.

Hospitalar Psychology had an improvement as a working field and matter of research among psychologists. It shows an increase in the importance of these professionals in the hospital, highlighting their role in the multi professional teams. The Intensive Care Unit is one of the most hostile and traumatic environments of the hospital, mainly because it presents a confront between life and death. ICU hospitalization causes a huge impact on the patient, their families and staff, since death is still seen as failure and taboo, even by health professionals. This study aims to systematize the psychological attention given in ICUs. For this, an integrative review of literature was made in Brazilian databases, using Intensive care unit and family as descriptors. A total of 16 papers were selected. The results show that hospitalar psychology in ICU is in expansion. Dealing with end of life situations, farewell rituals, anticipatory mourning and death elaboration are current tasks of the psychologist. The psychologist should also work with patient, family and team to improve communication.
