SILVA, Bruna Matias da  e  BENINCA, Ciomara. Suicidal ideation on cancer patients. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.1, pp. 218-231. ISSN 1516-0858.

Cancer causes significant physical and psychological impact. Individuals with cancer are at increased risk of suicide compared to the general population. There are few studies in Brazil that investigated suicidal ideation in cancer patients. In this context, the objective of the present study was to verify the prevalence of suicidal ideation in cancer patients, examining sociodemographic characteristics and other possible correlated variables, such as time of diagnosis, relapse, etc. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and comparative study. The sample consisted of 32 patients on cancer treatment evaluated by the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (QIS). Data were analyzed descriptively and using the chi-square test. The results indicate that the prevalence of suicidal ideation was 12.5%, with a significant correlation with the variables cancer recurrence, psychiatric disorder and suicidal ideation prior to the diagnosis of cancer. It is concluded that it is of fundamental importance that the health team take into account the mental health of the patient and their psychiatric history, providing evaluation by professionals of psychology and psychoanalysis, who are professionals trained to listen to the suicidal patient, as well as the psychiatrist, in order to prevent and intervene early in situations involving suicide.
