TEIXEIRA, Renata de Sá  y  HEMESATH, Tatiana Prade. Psychotherapeutic follow-up in the context of pediatric hospitalization: mothers' perception. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.2, pp. 22-43. ISSN 1516-0858.

Childhood disease and hospitalization has a huge emotional impact on family members, especially on mothers who usually play the role of caregivers during admission. The present study aimed to evaluate how mothers of children, admitted to a tertiary hospital perceive the psychotherapeutic follow-up provided in this context. An interview was used for data collection and content analysis was performed to categorize the results. It showed that psychotherapeutic treatment allows the mothers to understand the limitations imposed by the child’s diagnosis and prognosis, facilitating the reorganization of defensive mechanisms against hospital demands. The participants also realized that psychotherapy helped in the recognition of suffering resulting from the experience, allowing the improvement of adequate psychic resources to deal with it.

Palabras clave : psychotherapy; hospitalization; pediatric.
