ARRUDA, Lícia Soares Pereira de  y  CALHAO, Ana Rafaela Pecora. Meanings and feelings attributed by resident physicians in communication of patient’s terminal phase. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.2, pp. 61-83. ISSN 1516-0858.

This research arose from the interest in the topic of termination and communication of the diagnosis of palliative care by a medical team. The purposes of the study were to understand the meanings credited and feelings experienced by resident physicians when communicating final phase of life to the patient. Data collection was carried out through interviews, with two guiding questions, in agreement with the theoretical reference of the Person-Centered Approach. The interviews were transcribed, organized in a corpus, processed by the IRAMUTEQ program and analyzed in the light of the theoretical reference of the Person-Centered Approach, which resulted in four classes of analysis. The participants shared their personal and professional dilemmas and expressed that the association between medicine and psychology is positive, considering that the presence of the psychologist at the moment of communication, as has been done in the university hospital, is effective and, therefore, should be encouraged and continued. Regardless of the difficulties experienced, they conduct their practices through a look beyond the acquired technical-scientific knowledge, presenting empathy, sensitivity and the desire that the care to the patients to be increasingly humanized.

Palabras clave : communication to the patient; feelings; difficulties faced; terminal phase; person-centered approach.
