Introduction: Obesity is a chronic disease with great number of occurrences worldwide and considered by the World Health Organization as a critic health public issue. A challenge for health professionals is to find techniques that help increase patients adherence to weight control treatment. Objective: discuss emotional and behavioral aspects associated to maintenance of chronic obesity treatment. Method: report of therapeutic group research performed by three psychologists of an university hospital of the City of Rio de Janeiro for obese patients. Patients were six women between 40 and 60 years old. In the beginning, there were individual physiological screening with all of them, followed by five group meetings with activities that lead them to think about self-esteem, perceived body image, setback and identification of emotional factors related to food uncontrol. Results: research participants showed good adhesion to group work. The proposed activities were well received and each patient was able to find opportunity to talk and feel comfortable. Conclusion: Hospital therapeutical support groups to obese patients can be a special factor in the adherence to the multi-professional treatment of obesity and should be included in support projects to these patients.
