ROCHA, Heidmilene Gonçalves  y  SEIDL, Eliane Maria Fleury. Alcohol use before and after liver transplantation: study with transplanted people. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.2, pp. 203-223. ISSN 1516-0858.

Liver transplantation aims to restore the health and quality of life of the pacient. For those with an alcoholic etiology, the procedure requires at least six months of drug abstinence prior to surgery and total abstinence after transplantation. The exploratory study aimed to analyze transplant recipient's perception of alcohol use before and after transplantation. Eight male patients from a Transplantation Center in Brasilia participated. This was a qualitative research with content analysis from semi-structured interviews. Three categories - drinking before transplantation, drinking after transplantation and alcoholic relapse - were identified from the perceptions of patients under two conditions: relapse and no relapse. All participants had similar perceptions about alcohol use and reported that the family was the main source of social support, both to cease alcohol use and to maintain this behavior, but also identified it as a risk factor for relapse, as a function of conflicts.

Palabras clave : liver transplantation; relapse; alcoholism; health psychology.
