Abstract

MILHORIM, Thaís Kristine  and  COSTA NETO, Sebastião Benício da. Manifestations of the psychic suffering: psychosomatic in the context of the emergency room. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2019, vol.22, n.1, pp. 127-153. ISSN 1516-0858.

Psychosomatic manifestations are the expression of conflicts and anguishes through bodily symptoms, after the limits of mental assimilation are surpassed. The objective of this work is understanding the presence of psychological aspects in patients who arrive at an Emergency Room, and how these aspects relate to the eclosion or the course of a disease. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study, with a clinical-qualitative approach, using a case-series study as a methodological resource. Two patients from a tertiary level hospital participated in the study. Data were analyzed according to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The consideration of the cases described led to the definition of six categories for discussion, which were: the dimension of grief and loss history; support networks; psychological structures and coping mechanisms; dealing with the psychosomatic dimension; relation to the hospital environment; and health network. It was possible to consider the relevance of the psychological aspects in the manifestation and course of the bodily symptoms, and the need to understand and make clear subjective aspects associated to the symptoms.

Keywords : psychosomatic medicine; urgency; emergency room; somatization.
