Communicating bad news at the Intensive Care Center is considered one of the most difficult tasks for health professionals, as they may not have had adequate and sufficient training to develop such a skill. In this sense, this theoretical article proposes to present the importance of communicating bad news in the Intensive Care Centers and the skills that health teams can develop for quality care, in addition to strengthening the patient, family and team relationship. This article presents some recommendations for protocols that can contribute to the development and improvement of skills in the process of communicating bad news in clinical practice in intensive care both with patients, respecting their autonomy in relation to decisions about their own treatment, and with their families, and also, with the whole team
