Abstract

CARVALHO, Gabriela Borges; COSTA NETO, Sebastião Benício da  and  FERREIRA, Cintia Bragheto. Art as a psychotherapy device in the hospital treatment of people with onco-hematological diseases. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.1, pp. 95-108. ISSN 1516-0858.

Cancer desease is responsible for several physical and emotional changes, causing suffering and a confrontation with the possibility of death. Art as a psychotherapeutic practice has shown to be a powerful way for the expression of human subjectivity, from the perspective of art therapy, which allows to access emotional contents and re-signification. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the use of art and the emotional experience of patients and to reflect on how it can help in coping with cancer. This is a qualitative-descriptive study, realized at a public university hospital, with 10 patients diagnosed with onco-hematological diseases, using six works of art by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The results suggest that art as a psychotherapeutic instrument is a possible practice in the hospital environment, insofar as it favors the contact with intrapsychic contents, strengthening the egoic functions and the coping processes of the disease.

Keywords : onco-hematology; hospital psychology; art; art therapy; emotional experience.
