Anxiety events in pediatric patients exposed to surgical procedures may be ameliorated through preanesthetic agents, distractive activities, activities contextualized to hospitalization, psychological counseling and/or parental presence. The present literature review investigated empirical studies on the effects of non-pharmacological interventions on children undergoing surgery. The portals of CAPES, PROQUEST and SciELO Periodicals were consulted between 2018 and 2013. The results demonstrated: (a) the potential efficacy of psychological methods in facilitating the administration and/or replacement of sedative agents; and (b) the primacy of approaches that combine familiarization of the child with hospitalization through instructions for dealing with adverse situations, distraction activities regarding imminent surgical procedure, and active involvement of caregivers in preoperative activities. More systematized studies should functionally analyze the role of contextual variables.
